Admissions Process

Welcome to Stepping Stones Montessori School!

Stepping Stones is not a typical school. We are a passionate community of self-directed children, Montessori-certified educators, supportive administrators, and dedicated parents. We partner with families so that we can better support the natural development of their children.

In the early 1900s, Dr. Maria Montessori proposed the theory of the Four Planes of Development: a non-linear progression of how humans learn. This physician and educator who gave rise to an entire educational movement was ahead of her time. Today, technology offers proof that learning begins before birth and that young children's brains are wired to explore their surroundings and direct their own learning. Our classroom environments here at SSMS are carefully prepared to respond to the needs of children in the first, second, and third planes of development: from the sensory-rich infant room (beginning at age three months) to the new farm-based middle school (ages 12–15).

Sarah Danielski, Admissions Director

As an SSMS student, I first understood the groundbreaking work of Dr. Maria Montessori when I played “old Maria” in one of our school’s annual musicals. I donned a wool shawl over an ankle-length dress with hook-and-eye–fastened boots, and my hair was dyed gray. On stage, I was charged with explaining to international visitors why the children were so engaged and productive. As Admissions Director, I am fortunate enough to continue extolling the benefits of the Montessori method to prospective parents and the greater Grand Rapids community.

I hope you will join me for a guided tour of our facility to learn more about our programs, our history, and our community.
